Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Being able to communicate is a fundamental human right. Our basic needs are met by communicating and interacting with the people around us. For most of us this is an automatic process, one that we think very little about. The moment we begin to consider the complexity behind being able to use and understand spoken language we become eternally grateful to Allah (SWT) for his generosity and blessings upon us. Some individuals have impaired communication skills. In the UK one in ten children have a speech, language or communication difficulty (I Can Statistics). With such high prevalence it is understandable why Speech and Language Therapist’s are so sought after. It is their role to support an individual to communicate in the most effective way possible. With Speech and Language Therapy being a relatively new health profession there are many hurdles that need to be encountered not just nationally but worldwide. Some such hurdles are the lack of therapists themselves, poor understanding of communication skills vs. pathology, failure of identification and poor resources to provide support.

As a Pakistani Speech and Language Therapist working in London I have for some time been investigating the presence of this profession in the country of my origin. I feel saddened that Speech and Language Therapy is not a recognized profession and that as a whole the awareness of communication difficulties and support is historic in nature. When Mr Anees Qari from Iqra Educational Trust gave me the opportunity to support the development of Speech and Language Therapy in some special schools in Lahore, Pakistan I jumped at the offer. Looking back now at my short trip without doubt I can say that this was the most rewarding piece of work I have done in my career so far.

Most of the work was focused at PSRD. I was welcomed to the school by some beautiful children singing a welcome song and play. I was amazed to see the confidence in these young girls who had some quite distinct disabilities. I met with the staff and they showed me around the school and introduced me to several children. I was truly impressed to see the good work of Iqra Educational Trust and it was pleasing to see that their donated resources were being fully utilized. The Sheltered Workshop and Art Rooms were inspirational. I visited the speech unit and discussed speech and language therapy provision with the teachers. I gained an insight into their knowledge and needs. The majority of the children at school have some form of communication difficulty. The most apparent was cerebral palsy and learning difficulties. Some children are pre-verbal whilst many have some form of social communication disorder. The following day I ran a tailored training session and workshop for staff at the school. This was well attended with an audience of about 30. I focused on identifying speech, language and communication difficulties and strategies to support these children. I handed over Speech and Language Therapy resources that were donated by Iqra Educational Trust and many other organizations that I had arranged through my work. This was followed by a question and answer session and a word of thanks.

It was an honour to visit PSRD and to see the commitment and passion of the staff. I am pleased we have set off on our journey to ensure all our children despite their background or medical difficulties can achieve their basic human right to communicate. Inshallah I hope that I can go back and continue to provide the much needed support for teachers working with these children with significant communication difficulties. My sincere thanks to Iqra Educational Trust for giving me the opportunity to help. May Allah (SWT) bless all the good devoted people who are involved in these projects and help us all to contribute to making a positive future for all children in Pakistan.

PSRD School (Lahore)

I and my family visited PSRD School on 13th April 2007. We were greeted by the principal Mrs. Tasneem. She briefed us about the PSRD school aims and objectives and thanked IQRA Trust members for all the work IQRA is doing towards the betterment of the school. PSRD School is for special children who have different disabilities. Most of the funding is done by various trusts and IQRA is one of them.

Principal of PSRD took us to every class and we chatted with some of the children. PSRD is celebrating its silver jubilee and most of the students were preparing for the ceremony. We heard a special song which they had prepared for the ceremony and our hearts were moved that those children performed so well that no one can distinguish them from normal children.

IQRA Trust is one those trusts whose presence can be seen from the computer lab to the science lab. Children were performing scientific experiments in the science lab and some of the children were efficiently using the computers provided by IQRA.

A special ceremony was organised to distribute gifts to the IQRA trust sponsored children. The ceremony started with the recitation of the Holy Qur'an by one of the children. We were introduced to all of the sponsored children by the principal. Then gifts donated by IQRA trust were distributed among the children. The smiles on those innocent faces were unmatchable. They all thanked IQRA trust and prayed for the well being of the members.

PSRD School had rented a piano from some other school and they were demanding it back. Keeping in view the importance of the musical instrument IQRA Trust bought them a piano and that was also handed over to the staff in the ceremony. We were also shown the library and the cupboards donated by the IQRA Trust. Sweets were also distributed among all PSRD students by IQRA Trust.
Our visit ended with a thanks note form the principal and best wishes from the children.

Please note, ‘Mureed Kay’ is a small town situated 28km away from Lahore. This is an industrial town and the majority of the population work in the small factories, as a result ordinary people’s income and standard of living is very low.

Waqar Secondary School

The ‘Waqar’ school is situated in one of the poor localities in Lahore and there are about 150 boys and girls. IQRA Trust has provided Waqar School with computers, educational equipment and resources, as well as assistance to complete their building work. We are pleased to report that as a result, the school is making excellent progress and the exam results this year have been reported to be very good.

Jinnah School have put forward a request to set up a well stocked library, Mr Aslam and IQRA Trust will provide them funding for this. The school has suffered major setbacks since many of the well qualified and experienced staff do not stay at the school very long as , they cannot afford to pay salaries in line with those provided by private centres. The school is also lacking a science teacher, and has approached IQRA Trust to partly fund the science teacher’s salary.
